I sat down to eat and the dog was sick
Dear Delyara, I had literally just picked up my fork. The plate was hot, I was starving, and for one brief second I thought maybe dinner would reach me before the next interruption did. Then the sound started from the hallway, and I knew immediately what it was. So there I was, putting the plate down untouched, cleaning the floor, checking the dog, spraying the rug, and trying not to feel furious at life for creating one more badly timed need. It wasn’t the dog’s fault. That almost made it worse. Because some of the hardest moments in adulthood are not dramatic, not unfair in any grand moral sense, just horribly timed. Rest interrupted before it becomes rest. Hunger delayed again. Your body once more placed on hold while something else takes priority. By the time I came back to the table, the food was still there. I wasn’t in the same mood.
