My Diary

I sat on the edge of my daughter’s bed after tucking her in and didn’t move

Dear Delyara, She had already fallen asleep. One hand under her cheek, one sock still somehow half on, hair across the pillow like she had landed there more than arranged herself there. I should have gone downstairs. There were still dishes, one email I hadn’t answered, and tomorrow to think about. Instead I sat there. I think I needed one moment in the day that wasn’t practical. No sorting, wiping, checking, reminding, planning. Just sitting beside someone I love while the room stayed quiet around us. No one asking anything. No one needing the next step. By the time I went downstairs, I felt both calmer and sadder. Calmer because the pause helped. Sadder because I realized how rare those still moments have become in the middle of all the management.
