I Sat on the Edge of the Bed With One Shoe Still On
Dear Delyara, I had come upstairs to change, but instead I sat there half in and half out of the day, one shoe off, one shoe on, bag on the floor, work still in my shoulders, home already waiting downstairs in the form of dinner, questions, and whatever emotional weather the evening was going to carry. Sometimes I think the hardest part of adult life is transition. Not the roles themselves, but how quickly you are expected to move between them without enough space in between to become a person again. I sat there longer than I meant to. Not resting exactly. Just unable to begin the next version of myself quickly enough to make the day look smooth. Eventually, I took the second shoe off. But the body lagged behind much longer than the shoes did.
