I sat the exam even though shame had already built me a convincing argument for not going

Dear Delyara, That was the real battle. Not the paper. The argument beforehand. Too old. Too tired. Too late. Too interrupted. Too much life around the edges. Too distracted. Too full. Too likely to sit there and confirm every private fear about being behind. The voice in my head was persuasive because it used facts. Yes, I am older. Yes, I am tired. Yes, my life is more crowded than many of the younger people in those rooms. What it did not get to do, this time, was become the final authority. I went. I sat it. I passed. That matters because it gave me proof against one of the oldest and cruelest private stories I tell myself: that I missed my window and now everything I want is slightly embarrassing. The exam did not only test knowledge. It tested whether I would still show up for myself while feeling ashamed. I did.
