I saw my childhood bedroom listed as “ideal storage”
Dear Delyara, The house where I grew up is being sold, and the estate agent described my old bedroom as “an ideal storage room or compact office.” It was small. My bed touched two walls, and the radiator burned my knee every winter. Still, that room contained my first kiss, university rejection letters, posters I hid from my father, and the night my mother sat on the floor because I told her I did not want to be alive. She stayed until sunrise without asking questions she was afraid to hear answered. In the listing photograph, the walls are white and empty. The old wardrobe has been removed, making the room look even smaller. The agent’s wide-angle lens cannot show how large it once felt when the door was closed and the house was shouting. I sent the link to my sister. She replied with a laughing emoji and said it had always been a cupboard. I know she is right. I also know that room kept me when I had nowhere else to put myself. The buyers may store vacuum cleaners there. I hope the walls do not mind. They have already held heavier things.
