I See Their Limits More Kindly Now

Dear Delyara, Gratitude for family is complicated for me because my family was never simple. There were things missing. Things mishandled. Things said that stayed too long. Love was there, but not always in the form I needed. Care was there, but sometimes mixed with control, fear, criticism, or emotional immaturity. For a long time, I could only see what I had not received. Now I am old enough to hold a wider truth. I can see the limitations of my parents without denying the effort they made inside those limitations. I can see how my father loved through practicality because emotion was never a language he learned well. I can see how my mother’s worry often arrived in the shape of pressure because fear was easier for her than tenderness. I can see the human beings under the roles now. That doesn’t erase pain. But it changes the light around it. My gratitude is not naïve. It is not denial. It is simply the ability to say: there were wounds, yes — and there was love too, even if it arrived in imperfect hands.
