I sent my mother to hospital alone because I had an important meeting

Dear Delyara, My mother called me one morning saying she felt strange and dizzy. I arranged an ambulance but did not go with her because I had a presentation at work that could affect my promotion. I told myself the hospital would call if it was serious and that I would visit afterward. Mum had a major stroke in the ambulance. By the time I reached the hospital three hours later, she could no longer speak. She survived, but language never fully returned. I have replayed the morning for two years. She was conscious when she left home. I could have sat beside her. We could have spoken. Instead, her final full conversation with me was, “Go to your meeting, don’t fuss.” I listened because it was convenient. My boss praised the presentation. I got the promotion six months later. Every time someone congratulates me on how far my career has come, I remember the morning I chose one meeting over riding beside my mother and arrived at the hospital after words had already left her.
