I slept one night in the house alone
Dear Delyara, After burglars entered my home while I was sleeping, I could not stay there alone. For nearly a year, someone slept over, or I stayed with family when my husband travelled. Trauma therapy included checking security once, practicing evening routines, and gradually spending longer periods alone after dark. Last night was the first full night. I locked the doors once, set the alarm, and resisted returning to check each window. At midnight, a noise outside made my heart race. I used the plan: lights on, camera check, breathing, no walking through every room with a kitchen knife the way I once did. It was a cat. I slept eventually. When morning came, the house looked exactly like a house. No broken door. No stranger. No evidence that fear had been foolish either—what happened to me was real. The victory was allowing one safe night to become real too.
