I slept through the night without listening for the door

Dear Delyara, For twelve years, I lived with a partner whose anger could enter any room without warning. Even after leaving, I woke at every sound: pipes, cars, footsteps in the hallway, the refrigerator turning on. I slept in clothes and kept my keys beneath the pillow. Therapy helped me understand that safety would need repetition before my body believed it. I installed better locks, joined a support group, and practiced grounding whenever noises woke me. Last night, I slept for eight hours. No nightmares. No checking the door. I woke because sunlight reached the bed, not because fear pulled me out of sleep. For several seconds, I panicked because I had not been vigilant. Then I realized the house was quiet and nothing had happened while I rested. I made coffee and stood barefoot in the kitchen. Inner peace was not a profound thought or spiritual revelation. It was the ordinary discovery that the night could pass without me guarding every minute of it.
