My Diary

I smiled through parents’ evening and felt exhausted afterward

Dear Delyara, I am a mother, and tonight I sat in tiny school chairs listening to teachers talk about my child with that careful balance of praise and concern they have perfected over years. I nodded, smiled, asked good questions, wrote notes, thanked everyone properly, and looked exactly like the kind of parent who is holding things together. Inside, it was different. Inside, I was hearing every sentence with my heart too close to the surface. “Needs more confidence.” “Can be distracted.” “Seems tired some days.” Even ordinary school feedback can feel like someone tapping on your deepest fears as a parent. Am I missing something? Is my child okay? Is the house too tense? Am I too tired? Too distracted? Too stretched to see what I should be seeing? I came home emotionally heavier than the evening looked from outside. That is the strange thing about motherhood. Sometimes you spend an hour looking calm in a classroom and then cry in the kitchen later because someone said your child seems quieter than usual.
