I spoke into the microphone after twenty years of avoiding public speaking

Dear Delyara, I have avoided public speaking since freezing during a school presentation at sixteen. At work, I chose roles where other people presented my analysis. Eventually, avoiding visibility began limiting my career. I joined a speaking group and started small: introducing myself for thirty seconds, then two-minute talks, then answering questions without reading every word from notes. Yesterday, I presented our team’s project to more than one hundred people. My hands shook so badly before going onstage that I could hear the paper moving. I put the notes down. The first minute was rough. Then I saw one colleague nodding and found my pace. I spoke for twelve minutes and answered two questions. Nothing miraculous happened afterward. I did not suddenly love microphones. I simply stopped allowing one memory from age sixteen to decide which rooms my adult voice could enter.
