My Diary

I stared at the fruit bowl and realised it had become another to-do list

Dear Delyara, The apples needed using. The bananas were almost too soft. The grapes needed washing. The child who won’t eat oranges still had to get some kind of fruit in tomorrow’s lunch. Nothing in that bowl was simple anymore. That’s what gets tiring. The way ordinary objects slowly become administrative. Fruit is no longer fruit. It is timing, nutrition, waste, cost, one more thing to remember correctly in a week already full of smaller, duller forms of care no one ever fully sees while they’re happening. I miss when something could just be itself.
