I started painting again after twelve years
Dear Delyara, The paints were dried at the edges, the brushes were stiff, and I nearly put everything away after five minutes because I felt ridiculous. I used to paint before work became heavier, before children, before life became all utility and responsibility and sensible spending. Somewhere along the way I started treating creativity like a luxury I had grown out of. Last weekend I bought two new brushes and a cheap sketch pad. The first thing I painted was terrible. The second thing was also terrible. But halfway through the third one, I noticed something had changed in my breathing. I was inside an hour that did not ask me to be useful to anyone. I had forgotten that pleasure could come back like that — awkwardly, imperfectly, but still honestly. It felt like meeting a younger version of myself without embarrassment.
