I stayed at the picnic until sunset
Dear Delyara, Chronic pain has made family outings complicated. I often leave early because sitting, walking, noise and pretending I am fine become exhausting. My daughter stopped asking whether I would stay for the whole event because she did not want me feeling guilty. Yesterday was her birthday picnic. I paced myself properly beforehand, took medication as prescribed, brought the supportive chair my pride used to refuse, and rested when I needed to instead of waiting until pain became unbearable. I stayed until sunset. I did not run around. I did not carry heavy things. I spent part of the afternoon lying on a blanket while everyone talked around me. It still counted as being there. When the sky changed colour, my daughter looked over and said, “You made it to the end.” I said, “Apparently.” A good day did not mean my pain disappeared. It meant I stopped requiring disappearance before allowing myself to participate.
