Other VictoriesOvercoming Fear

Wellington, New Zealand

I stayed in the room while my blood was taken

Dear Delyara, I have severe needle phobia and used to avoid blood tests until doctors became genuinely concerned. I once fainted in a waiting room before anyone touched me. With therapy, we worked through exposure gradually and my clinic agreed to accommodations: lying down, no surprise equipment, one experienced phlebotomist, and permission to stop. Today, I had the blood test I had postponed for a year. I stayed conscious. I looked away, used the muscle-tensing technique I practiced, and told the nurse when I needed a pause. The entire procedure lasted minutes. Fear was present from beginning to end. Overcoming it did not mean becoming calm. It meant the test happened while fear sat beside me and failed to cancel the appointment.
