The BondFriendship

I stayed too long in a friendship that no longer felt kind

Dear Delyara, I think loyal people suffer from this particular problem more than they admit. Nothing dramatic happened. That’s the difficulty. No betrayal big enough to point to. No single moment I could hold up and say, there, that is why I left. Instead it was a slow erosion. I started censoring myself. Started leaving calls feeling heavier than when they began. Started noticing that I was being listened to less and used more. Started dreading her name on my phone while still telling myself she had “been there for me for years.” That sentence trapped me for too long. History is not the same as safety. Shared years are not the same as present kindness. And yet I stayed, partly because I didn’t want to look cruel, and partly because I didn’t want to admit that some relationships do not end in explosions. Some just stop being places where you can arrive whole. Leaving would have felt easier if she had been obviously awful. She wasn’t. She was just no longer good for me. And somehow that was harder to act on.
