I stayed up late sewing a button because no one else would notice until morning
Dear Delyara, I am a wife and mother, and tonight I sat under the lamp in the living room sewing a button back onto a school cardigan after everyone had gone to bed. The house was finally quiet. The television was off. The dishes were done enough. And there I was, doing one more small repair that did not belong to me and would still somehow become my problem if I left it until morning. That is what so much of care looks like now. Invisible prevention. Fixing what would otherwise become stress later. Not because anyone asked in a grateful tone. Because I know exactly how tomorrow morning would feel if I didn’t. The button is on. The cardigan is ready. No one will probably even mention it. That’s fine. I’m not angry about that tonight. I’m just aware of how much of family life depends on the quiet labour no one sees because they are asleep while it’s happening.
