The WeightPast Wounds

I Still Assume I Will Be Blamed Before I Assume I Will Be Understood

Dear Delyara, A serious tone, a changed mood, a delayed response, one difficult conversation waiting at the edge of the day — and immediately some old part of me begins preparing for blame. Explaining, softening, shrinking, anticipating the wrong reading of me before it has even fully arrived. I know where that comes from. That doesn’t stop it costing me. It means I walk into too many moments already half-defending myself. It means my body treats uncertainty as accusation far too quickly. It means I spend energy on emotional pre-damage because somewhere in me there is still the belief that if I don’t soften first, I will be hit harder when the misunderstanding comes. That’s what old wounds do. They make self-protection look like personality. And I am tired of how much of my personality has been shaped around preventing pain that isn’t always even in the room anymore.
