I still become more careful than I mean to around family
Dear Delyara, It happens so quickly that I sometimes only notice it afterward. The softer wording. The delayed honesty. The emotional cushioning. The instinct to manage the room before I fully inhabit it. Family still does that to me. Nothing dramatic has to happen. That is what makes it difficult to explain. The conversation can be normal, polite, even loving in obvious ways, and still I leave feeling slightly translated, as if I had spent the whole time walking on an older floor than the present moment deserved. I think that’s what history does in families. It stays under the ordinary. It makes simple conversations more layered than they appear. And I still feel those layers in my body. Even when I understand the dynamics better now. Even when I have more language. Even when I know I am no longer who I was in those earlier years. Understanding does not automatically erase choreography. My body still remembers some steps I no longer consciously choose. That is tiring in a very specific way. A familial way.
