The BondFamily
I still become polite before I become honest
Dear Delyara, That is one of the clearest signs that old family patterns are in the room. I don’t arrive as myself first. I arrive as someone easier. Reasonable, softened, agreeable, careful, slightly edited. I can feel the real me waiting behind that version, but by the time she gets a turn, the conversation is often already halfway over. I know where that came from. I know it once protected something important. It still leaves me tired and lonely afterward. Because being polite is not the same as being safe enough to tell the truth.
