I still become the careful version of myself too fast
Dear Delyara, It happens before I’ve really chosen it. One tone. One look. One shift in the room, and suddenly I’m speaking more softly, smiling earlier, stepping around my real opinion, becoming easier to digest. It’s so practiced in me that from the outside it probably just looks like politeness. It isn’t. It’s fear in neat clothes. What hurts is that I usually notice it while it’s happening and still can’t fully stop it. Old family habits reach the body before dignity gets there. Then later I sit in the car or lie in bed and replay the whole thing feeling angry that I reduced myself again to keep the room smooth. That anger is familiar now. It never feels less sad.
