I still become too careful in certain family rooms

Dear Delyara, My body knows before my mind admits it. The moment I walk into some family spaces, I start adjusting. I speak more carefully, smile a little too quickly, explain before anyone asks, shrink my real opinions into softer versions, and try to sound easier than I feel. It is exhausting. What makes it worse is that nothing obviously terrible has to happen. Sometimes it’s just the old emotional weather of those rooms. The memory of what it cost me, in the past, to be more direct, more honest, more fully myself. So I become manageable instead. And I hate that I still do that. Because I’m not a child anymore. But parts of me still react like one.
