The WeightGuilt

I still feel guilty when I choose my own peace before other people’s comfort

Dear Delyara, I know what the healthy choice is now, at least in theory. I know that saying no before resentment is wiser than saying yes and becoming cold. I know that boundaries are supposed to protect relationships as much as they protect the self. I know that low capacity deserves honesty and not performance. And yet guilt still comes almost every single time. It comes when I don’t answer quickly enough. It comes when I leave the family chat alone for a day. It comes when I cancel something social because I know I will arrive brittle and leave emptier. It comes when I close my bedroom door in the middle of the afternoon because the house has become too loud in my body. The guilt says the same old things: you are selfish, you are difficult, you are disappointing people, a better woman would manage this more gracefully. I am tired of that voice. But I can’t pretend it has gone quiet yet.
