I still feel guilty when I choose quiet over being “good company”

Dear Delyara, As if quiet is a failure of character. As if tiredness becomes rude the minute another person can see it. As if being a loving partner or parent means staying socially warm and responsive even after the internal fuel has dropped below safe levels. I know that’s not fair. I still feel it. Some evenings I can tell that the healthiest thing I could do would be to stop performing ease and simply become quiet. Yet the guilt around that remains so immediate that I often keep giving past the point where kindness in me has already started curdling into resentment. That’s not goodness. It’s bad timing. I’m trying to learn the difference.
