The WeightPast Wounds

I still feel like I need to explain myself before I deserve to be understood

Dear Delyara, That habit lives very deep in me. Before I’ve even finished saying the thing, I’m already offering context. I hear myself softening it, qualifying it, adding background, making sure it sounds reasonable enough, fair enough, careful enough that no one can easily turn it against me. It is exhausting to live inside that much self-editing. The saddest part is that some of it sounds mature from outside. Measured. Thoughtful. Balanced. But inside, it often feels like fear. Fear of being misunderstood, judged, punished, dismissed, or made to feel foolish for having a feeling in the first place. I don’t want every truth to arrive carrying a helmet. But many of mine still do.
