I still feel morally smaller when money feels tight
Dear Delyara, That is the part I hate most. Not only the practical pressure. The personality change around it. The way a low balance can make me feel less capable, less adult, less generous, less relaxed, less like myself. It’s as if financial strain doesn’t stop at the wallet. It enters identity almost immediately. I know this is partly history. I know there are people with far more money than me and far less dignity, and the reverse is also true. Still, in the moment, it is hard to remember. Money reaches old fear faster than reason does. So yes, I can feel myself becoming smaller around it. More cautious, more defended, less playful, less alive. That’s the cost I resent most.
