The BondFamily
I still feel younger than I am when my family disapproves
Dear Delyara, A certain tone of disappointment or criticism can shrink me so fast it’s almost physical. My voice changes, my certainty goes, I start explaining myself like I’m reporting to an authority that still has the right to define me. I hate how old that feeling is. And how alive. Because I know better now. I know I am an adult. I know I don’t have to surrender my own reading of a situation just because someone older in the family has a stronger tone. And still, in the moment, my body often responds before my understanding can catch up. That’s the sort of power family patterns keep long after you think you’ve outgrown them.
