I still feel younger than I am when the room gets disappointed

Dear Delyara, Disappointment reaches me faster than anger. A particular tone in the family, that subtle shift that says I have fallen short somehow, and I can feel my certainty disappear in seconds. I start explaining too much, softening too quickly, becoming smaller before I have even fully checked whether I actually agree with the criticism. That old reaction embarrasses me. Not because it’s irrational. Because it’s alive. I know I’m an adult. I know I’m allowed my own reading of events. And still, under the wrong emotional light, certain family tones can send me straight back into a younger version of myself who believes being understood matters less than keeping the room calm. I’m tired of how fast I still disappear there.
