The SilenceTrauma

I still flinch inwardly when a man’s voice sharpens, even when the man is not dangerous

Dear Delyara, That is the cruelty of old fear. It does not ask whether the current room deserves it. A tone changes. A voice lifts. A word lands too heavily. And suddenly my body gets there before my mind can say, no, not this one, not now, not here. Something in me goes ready. Smaller. Faster. More alert. From the outside, nothing may show. That is part of why people underestimate what trauma looks like once it has gone domestic. It can live inside a perfectly ordinary moment — a workplace conversation, a family dinner, a stranger speaking too loudly in a shop — and still make the body run an old survival script so quickly that by the time you have reasoned your way back to the present, the damage has already happened in silence. I am tired of living with history this close to the surface of my skin.
