The WeightPast Wounds
I still make the truth smaller before anyone has even reacted
Dear Delyara, I know this pattern so well now that it almost embarrasses me. I begin speaking and, before the other person has even shown discomfort, I have already softened the sentence. Added a laugh, an apology, a “maybe I’m overthinking it,” a “it’s probably nothing,” some little piece of emotional padding to protect the room from the possibility that my full truth might land too hard. That speed tells me everything. It tells me the past is still close enough to shape the first draft of my honesty. I don’t want to live the rest of my life in reduced versions of myself. But I can’t pretend reduction isn’t still my first instinct in too many rooms.
