I still panic slightly before opening any official-looking envelope
Dear Delyara, Even when I know it may be harmless. I think that’s what long-term money stress does. It trains the body to treat paper as threat. A brown envelope on the mat can change my breathing before I’ve even opened it. It doesn’t matter whether it turns out to be routine. The reflex comes first. I hate that. I hate that bureaucracy has such direct access to my nervous system. I hate that numbers and letters from strangers in institutions can still make me feel like my dignity is one delayed payment away from becoming unstable. And yes, I know that sounds dramatic. It still feels true in my body.
