I still react to life as if old danger is just around the corner
Dear Delyara, It does not take much. A delayed reply. A colder tone. A change in someone’s face. A slammed cupboard. A mood in the room I cannot immediately read. That is often enough. My body gets there before my mind does. Tight chest. Smaller voice. Sudden alertness. Immediate scanning for what I did wrong, what I missed, what is about to come. It is humiliating to be living in the present with a body that still doesn’t fully trust it. That’s what old wounds do when they stay active long enough. They turn normal uncertainty into a private emergency. And the hardest part is how invisible this is to everyone else. From the outside I may just look quiet for a minute. Inside, I am already bracing for impact. I am so tired of a nervous system that keeps acting as if the worst thing that ever happened might still be waiting patiently in the next room.
