I still shrink when disappointment enters the room
Dear Delyara, That tone does something old to me. It makes me start explaining before I’ve even decided whether I agree. It makes me soften what I really think. It makes me act as if keeping the room calm matters more than keeping hold of my own truth. I know where it comes from. That does not make it less humiliating when I hear it still happening in my own voice. I am not a child. I am not powerless. And yet some family tones can still reduce me so quickly that later I lie awake feeling furious at myself for giving away so much ground in one conversation. The anger afterward is almost worse than the shrinking in the moment.
