The BondParents

I still want emotional language they may never learn

Dear Delyara, I know my parents have their limits. I know where they come from. I know what shaped them. And still, some part of me keeps wanting a language from them that they have never really spoken — one with more emotional accuracy, more direct tenderness, more ability to name feeling without discomfort or detour. I understand them more now. The longing did not disappear with the understanding. That’s the part of being someone’s child that still surprises me.
