My Diary

I stood in the doorway and watched the rain for no reason

Dear Delyara, No practical purpose. No washing to check. No child to call in. No dog to let out. I just stood there watching the rain hit the patio and felt my mind go slightly quieter while I did. It was only a few minutes, but it reminded me how starved I’ve become for moments that have no next step attached to them. So much of my day is linked — if this, then that; after this, then that; remember this because tomorrow; do this now so later. The rain did not want anything from me. It simply happened, and I got to be there without converting it into a task. I wish I made more room for that kind of purposeless attention. It felt like air.
