My Diary

I stood outside my daughter’s room and decided not to knock

Dear Delyara, I wanted to ask if she was okay. Ask about the tone she used earlier. Ask whether school was actually fine or the special teenage version of fine that means the exact opposite. I wanted to open the door and be the kind of mother who always reaches the right place at the right time. But I didn’t knock. Because sometimes love now means not insisting. Sometimes it means letting a child have one private room in the world and trusting that the door might open later if you don’t make it feel watched. That is not easy for me. It feels like standing still while your heart tries to walk forward without you.
