My Diary

I stood outside my son’s room and chose not to knock

Dear Delyara, I knew something was wrong. Not the kind of wrong that creates a school call or a big obvious scene. The smaller kind. The kind that shows up in the speed of answers, in the way a boy drops his bag, in the careful flatness of “fine.” I wanted to ask. I wanted to push. I wanted to open the door and become useful. But I also know that children who are trying to become themselves need privacy, not surveillance wearing the face of love. So I stood there for a moment, listened to the silence on the other side, and walked away. That felt like grief.
