My Diary

I stood outside my son’s room wanting to ask and choosing not to

Dear Delyara, I knew something was wrong. I could feel it in the way he came in from school, in the speed of his answers, in the way he disappeared upstairs a little too quickly after dinner. But I also know that boys this age often need the dignity of coming forward on their own timeline. That doesn’t make waiting easy. I stood outside his room with my hand almost raised to knock and felt all the old maternal conflict rise at once — protect or trust, ask or leave, enter or hold back, fix or stay available without invading. I walked away. That was the harder decision. And I’m still not sure whether it was the right one.
