I stopped answering work emails from bed

Dear Delyara, For years, my phone was the last thing I touched at night and the first thing I touched in the morning. I answered work emails from bed, during dinner, on holidays, and once from the waiting room while my wife was having surgery. Burnout forced me to change. My therapist asked me to create one boundary so concrete that I could not explain it away. I chose the bedroom. No work phone inside. At first, I left it outside the door and got up repeatedly to check. Then I bought an alarm clock so I could stop pretending I needed the phone beside me for waking. My manager complained once that I had not replied at 11:40 p.m. I told him I would respond during working hours. Nothing collapsed. Today marks six months. I still work hard, and there are genuine emergencies when colleagues can call the agreed number. But my bed has become a place where the company cannot reach me simply because somebody decided their urgency should become my insomnia.
