I Stopped Calling It Coping
Dear Delyara, I used to call it stress relief. That sounds cleaner than what it really was. I told myself I needed it because work was hard, because life was heavy, because everyone has something. I built a thousand small excuses around one truth I did not want to face: I was using something to leave myself. That is what addiction was for me. Not rebellion. Not recklessness. Escape. What no one tells you is that recovery is not just about removing the substance or the habit. It is about meeting the version of yourself that remained after all the numbing stopped. It is about hearing your own pain at full volume. It is about realizing how much of your life had been arranged around avoidance. Some days I still miss the shortcut. Some nights I still want the false relief. But now I know what it costs. I am not writing this as someone who has become saintly or perfect. I am writing this as someone who finally stopped lying about what was happening. That was my first real recovery: truth. Everything else came after that.
