I stopped checking my bank app every few hours and realised fear had become a ritual
Dear Delyara, I wasn’t checking for information anymore. I was checking for punishment. Morning, midday, afternoon, evening, one more glance before bed, one more small tightening in the stomach even when nothing had changed between one check and the next. I was not managing money. I was reopening fear repeatedly under the disguise of responsibility. So I changed the rule. Twice a day. Morning and evening. That’s it. The first few days were harder than I expected. My hand still reached for the habit. My body still wanted the anxious little hit of looking, the strange false relief of “staying on top of it,” even though being on top of it had already blurred into living inside it too much. Then slowly, something shifted. Less dread. Less self-surveillance. Less volunteering my nervous system to be frightened more often than the facts required. The money did not change instantly. My relationship with fear did. That matters.
