I stopped checking the bank app five times a day
Dear Delyara, It had become a ritual of self-harm disguised as responsibility. Nothing changed between one check and the next. The numbers did not improve because I looked again at 11:20, 1:40, 4:15, 7:00, and before bed. What changed was my body. Every check tightened it, sharpened it, reminded me of what I feared, and made me less present in the hour I was actually living. A month ago I made a rule. One check in the morning. One check in the evening. That’s it. It sounds small. It changed more than I expected. Because what I interrupted wasn’t only a financial habit. It was a fear habit. A compulsion to keep reopening the wound under the excuse of being sensible. Now, when the urge comes, I notice it for what it is — anxiety asking for more access, not truth asking to be faced. There is real relief in no longer volunteering my nervous system to be frightened more often than the facts require.
