I stopped explaining my no until it sounded like permission
Dear Delyara, That habit was exhausting me. Every time I needed to decline something, protect time, avoid a conversation, postpone a plan, say I was not available, or simply honour a limit, I used to wrap the no in so much softening that by the end it barely had a spine left. I would explain and explain until the other person had room to negotiate with it. My boundaries were clear in feeling and blurry in language. That has started to change. Not because I became rude. Because I became tired. Now sometimes I just say: I can’t. Not this week. I’m not available. That doesn’t work for me. Then I stop. The emotional shift this has created in my life is much bigger than the words themselves. Every time I say a cleaner no, I feel less resentful later. Less used. Less like I offered my life up in pieces because I was too afraid to disappoint someone for five minutes. That feels like awakening to me. Not learning to be hard. Learning that clarity is kinder than self-erasure.
