I Stopped Measuring My Recovery by How Closely I Resembled the Woman I Was

Dear Delyara, For a long time, I treated healing like a restoration project. Get back. Return. Recover. Become again. As if the only acceptable outcome of all the loss, fear, stress, illness, disappointment, and emotional wear was a polished return to the earlier version of me. I don’t think that is healing anymore. I think it is grief trying to bargain with time. This week I finally let myself honour a different truth: the woman I am now is not a failed copy of who I used to be. She is the one who survived. The one whose body knows more. The one whose mind has carried more. The one who needs different forms of care, different kinds of softness, different rhythms, different boundaries. Once I stopped demanding that healing restore me to an old self, I could finally start caring for the actual self in front of me. That felt like mercy. And like truth.
