I Stopped Reading Old Messages at Night

Dear Delyara, The habit had become a ritual. Late at night, when loneliness got louder, I would revisit old conversations. Tenderness. Attention. Versions of myself who had once felt chosen. I told myself it was memory, or comfort, or closure, or just a quick look. It wasn’t. It was reopening a wound because pain can start feeling familiar enough to confuse with intimacy. This week I deleted them. Not in anger. Not dramatically. In clarity. The first nights were harder. The loneliness had nowhere old to go. Then slowly something cleaner appeared — actual evening, actual grief, actual room to be where I really am instead of where I keep privately injuring myself by returning. That is a real victory. Not because the past means nothing. Because I stopped volunteering myself to hurt in the same exact way.
