I stopped reading the newspaper article about the crash

Dear Delyara, My daughter died in a road collision, and the local newspaper published an article that contained several inaccuracies. For years, I opened it almost every night. I hated the photograph they chose, the phrase “lost control,” the comments strangers left underneath. I believed rereading it kept me loyal to correcting the story. Therapy helped me notice the article had become a doorway I walked through whenever grief wanted to punish me. We contacted the newspaper, corrected the factual errors, and had several comments removed. Still, I kept the page bookmarked. Last month, I deleted the bookmark. Today, after a difficult evening, I almost searched for it again. Instead, I opened the folder containing my daughter’s own photographs: birthday cake on her nose, muddy boots, asleep beside the dog. Healing has meant allowing her life to be documented by people who knew her rather than repeatedly visiting the worst day through the language of strangers.
