I Stopped Saying “It’s Fine” When It Wasn’t, and the World Did Not Collapse Around My Honesty
Dear Delyara, I use that phrase too easily. It’s fine. No problem. Don’t worry. Really, it’s fine. Sometimes it is. Often it is just the quickest available bridge between what I feel and what the room seems equipped to tolerate. This week, when something wasn’t fine, I said so. Clearly. Without anger. Without over-explaining. Without rescuing the other person from the discomfort of hearing it. And what happened was… ordinary. No collapse. No punishment. No huge emotional backlash. Just the room adjusting to a truer sentence than I usually allow myself. That felt like a real change. Not because I became dramatic. Because I became more honest before resentment got the chance to harden.
