I Stopped Using Wine To Soften The Evenings And Had To Meet My Real Life Without That Blur Again

Dear Delyara, It wasn’t dramatic drinking. That’s part of why it was easy to excuse. A glass to take the edge off. Then another because the first one made the room easier. Then the quiet private habit of turning to the same thing at the same hour because the day felt too sharp in the body and I didn’t know another quick way to dull it. When I stopped, I realised something painful: the wine had not been relaxing me as much as interrupting the truth. The truth was I was overstimulated. Overused. Emotionally crowded. Lonely in certain places. Too full in others. And the wine had become a way of avoiding clean contact with all of that. Recovery, for me, began when I stopped calling it “just unwinding” and admitted it had become a ritual of emotional escape. The evenings were harder at first. Then clearer. Then more mine. That feels like sobriety in the truest sense — not only stopping something, but returning to reality without numbing its edges first.
