I stopped waiting to become my old self and started respecting the one who survived

Dear Delyara, I think that may be the deepest shift in me. For too long I thought healing meant return. Back to the old body. Back to the old energy. Back to the old marriage before it changed, the old mind before it carried so much, the old confidence before life taught me harder lessons than I knew how to hold gracefully. I don’t want to live in that impossible longing anymore. Now I am trying to respect the self who survived. The changed one. The one with less innocence, yes, but also more clarity. The one who needs different things now. The one who cannot keep being measured against an earlier version who had not yet paid these exact emotional costs. Healing, I am learning, is not always restoration. Sometimes it is honour. Sometimes it is simply ceasing to treat your changed self like a disappointment. That has softened my life more than nostalgia ever did.
