I Think I Use Sugar the Way Other People Use Hope
Dear Delyara, I reach for it when the day turns grey inside me. Not because I’m hungry in any clean bodily sense. Because I want interruption. Lift. A little hit of quick comfort that doesn’t ask anything complex back. Chocolate in the kitchen. Biscuits after everyone has gone upstairs. Something sweet standing by the sink while no one is watching. Not enough to look extreme. Enough to recognise the pattern. That is what troubles me. It isn’t the food alone. It’s the rhythm. The emotional reflex. The way sweetness has become a little private mercy I keep offering myself instead of the bigger structural care I actually need and haven’t built properly into my life. Sugar is easier than boundaries. Easier than rest. Easier than changing anything. That is exactly why I reach for it when I’m empty. I know this. I still do it. That is what makes it painful.
